The skin acts as a barrier against external agents, it’s the first thing other people see of us, and it’s a mirror of the changes our body undergoes over the years, which is why we’re so keen to keep it looking healthy and young as long as possible. This is particularly true for facial skin.

What are the typical signs of ageing?

The natural ageing process begins from the age of 25 to 30, when the first small expression lines begin to appear, especially in the more sensitive areas such as the forehead and eye contour.

Subsequently, these expression lines become deeper and more numerous, forming actual wrinkles, which can even affect the area around the mouth, which is most prone to losing elasticity.

Mature skin is characterised by:

•    Dry skin
•    Thin skin
•    Lack of brightness
•    Lack of tone and firmness
•    Deep wrinkles
•    Sallow or pale complexion 
•    Open pores
•    Hyperpigmentation and age spots 

What are the causes of skin ageing?

When we talk about causes, we must distinguish between natural causes, related to the normal process of cellular senescence, and environmental causes, due to external factors, on which we can selectively act.

Natural causes

Less collagen synthesis: skin thickness is mainly determined by the presence of type I collagen. In young skin, collagen synthesis and degradation are perfectly balanced, whereas in mature skin, normal collagen metabolism is disrupted, resulting in reduced skin thickness, loss of firmness and plumpness.

Reduced elastin synthesis: elastin is a protein present in all elastic fibres, such as tendons, arteries and also the skin. As the years pass, we produce less and less elastin, which is why the skin loses its elasticity and the first expression lines and then wrinkles begin to appear, caused by the skin's inability to relax again after a change.

Changes in melanin production: the mechanisms of melanin production also begin to vary with age, which is why irregular melanin production is often noted with the formation of darker hyperpigmentation spots, which are very frequent on the hands, face and décolleté.

Environmental causes

•    Stress, which leads to the production of free radicals, reactive and unstable species that bind with the components of our skin (lipids, phospholipids, collagen and hyaluronic acid), damaging them and causing premature ageing.
•    Pollution. Continuous exposure to smog and pollutants attacks our skin by restricting its respiration and hydration.
•    Exposure to UV rays, which also causes the release of free radicals, and can even damage the deeper layers of our skin.
•    Inadequate nutrition
•    Smoking and alcohol

It is against these latter factors that we can take action, avoiding all those situations that accelerate the normal ageing process and externally integrating all those substances that are useful for the regeneration of the epidermis and that can stimulate the synthesis of new cells.

Beauty routines and treatments for mature skin

A complete beauty routine for mature skin that needs extra nourishment includes specific cleansing, a moisturising and normalising pre-treatment, a specific treatment, an anti-oxidising, anti-ageing treatment, a brightening treatment, a treatment to pamper the lips (a detail not to be underestimated!) and an intensive treatment.

Step 1 - Specific cleansing

Double cleansing

Face masks: an intensive weekly treatment
