What is skin sagging?
Skin sagging, which is also called skin laxity, is a condition that mirrors a reduction in the production of collagen and elastin. It comes with drooping skin that affect certain areas only, which in women are arms and breast.
Sagging and drooping skin mainly come with aging: as facial skin experiences wrinkles' appearance due to troubles with keeping the skin hydrated, body skin tends to lose tone and elasticity, particularly in the arms and on the breast, because our organism produces less collagen and elastin, which are essential proteines that work synergistially to provide tthe skin with tone, strenght, and resistance. However, their specific functions are different. Let's compare collagen and elastine to better understand these essential elements:
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body: it can be found in our muscles, bones, blood vessels, digestive system, tendons, and of course in the skin. It is commonly defined as the glue that keeps each part of our body together. There exist 28 different types of collagen within our organism, and each of them carries out specific functions according to the position in which it works. Type I collagen represents 90% of the collagen present in our body, and it can be found in skin, hair, and nails, as well as in organs, bones, and ligaments.
As to elastin, this protein is mainly present in artery walls, lungs, intestine, and skin. As suggested by its name, elastin provides the skin with elasticity, thus allowing it to stretch and contract within certain limits. Our body produces elastin as we grow, but it stops its production aproximately in our 20ies. Due to the reduction in elastin production overtime, it comes the need to look for remedies to keep our skin elastic.
Skin sagging mainly depends on a reduction in the production of such proteins, and this is why our arms and breast skin looks drooping and less toned as we get older. Before unveiling our remedies to take care of drooping skin, let's better understand the causes of skin laxity.
Causes of skin sagging
As we have already said, one of the main causes of skin laxity is getting older: once that you have celebrated your 40th birthday, levels of collagen and elastin decrease by about 1% every year.
Among the other causes of skin sagging, we have to include changes within the adipose tissue's structure, which constitutes the deepest layers of the skin and that is held responsible for thermical and mechanical protection of the skin.
Even weight variations may cause skin laxity, because if one loses a lot of weight after having gained a lot, the skin gets less elastic as collagen and elastin struggle in riadapting to the new forms of the body. This condition may affect people who have undergone important changes in their nutrition, but it also may affect either during pregnancy or other situations that cause significant wight variations. In such cases, drooping skin may come with stretch marks.
It is important to mention that if drooping skin affects the area of the arms, it is caused by an imbalance between muscle mass and skin, or in other words, in all those cases where muscles are less developed related to skin surface.

We care to remind you that we can neither stop time nor change its course, but what we can do is to accept ourselves and our bodies. Only after this step of self-acceptance we can try some remedies to improve our look and to feel better!
Also, keep in mind that whether you want to solve the problem of sagging skin forever, you should resort to cosmetic surgery, but there exist half ways through to take care of dropping skin of arms and breast. Let's now unveil what one can actually do to tone and firm up breast and arms skin.
Working out
You won't be surprised, but the first remedy to firm and tone arms and breast skin is to engage in physical activity. It's not about becoming regular gym-goers, but for those who already are, you could assist those who are new. The focus is on performing some exercises to tone the skin of the arms and breast, making it firmer and more elastic. The exercises we suggest are designed for female individuals, more prone to skin relaxation in the areas of the arms and breasts, unlike men who experience the same condition but in different areas, especially around the abdomen.
If you have doubts about performing the exercises, ask a friend or family member who can help you, or use the numerous tutorials available online. We recommend paying close attention to the movements, especially if it's your first time doing them!
The exercises should be repeated 10 times in sets of 3/4 and can be part of your arms-shoulders routine or integrated into a complete workout, perhaps with some variations in repetitions or weights involved.
- Dips: If you're at the gym, place your hands on the edge of the bench; if you're at home, place them on the edge of a chair or low table. Your back should face the object you're leaning on, arms extended on the bench/chair; stretch your legs in front of you and bend your arms, keeping the elbows slightly turned inward, making sure not to raise the shoulders. Descend slowly, keeping the back straight, almost touching the floor with your backside, and immediately rise without fully extending the elbows. If it's too challenging, bend your legs slightly; if you're already experienced, elevate your legs.
- Triceps Extension: If you're at the gym, take a dumbbell of the appropriate weight with both hands and extend your arms overhead. If you're at home and don't have equipment, you can use 1-liter water bottles! In any case, the upper part of the arms should be next to the ears and the elbows outward. The torso remains upright, and the abdomen is engaged. Now, bend both elbows and bring the dumbbell to the height of the neck, keeping the upper part of the arms still, and return to the starting position. If you want, you can perform the exercise with one arm: in this case, it's better to use a lighter weight and alternate arms.
- Biceps Curl: In an upright position, place your feet shoulder-width apart and slightly bend your knees. The torso should stay upright, the abdomen tense, and the arms along the sides. Grab two dumbbells or two water bottles, one in each hand, with palms facing upward. Keep the upper part of the arms steady and bend the elbows. Bring the weights to the chest, without giving too much momentum, and lower them along the sides. Be careful not to arch the back and to keep the abdomen contracted to avoid injuries! You can move both arms together or alternate one arm at a time.
- Lateral Raises: The starting position is the same as the previous exercise, but in this case, the arms start from along the sides, with palms facing inward, and reach shoulder height, forming a "T." The rule is the same as the previous exercise: engaged abdomen, relaxed shoulders, and no excessive momentum to avoid straining the neck. Use weights or water bottles depending on where you're training.
- Close Grip Push-Ups: Push-ups couldn't certainly be missing among the exercises to firm arms and chest! Start in the classic push-up position, with hands under the shoulders and fingertips facing forward. Remember to keep the abdomen engaged and to stay as straight as possible, without arching the lower back or straining the shoulders. Now, bend your arms and lower yourself slowly as far as you can. Keep the elbows close to the body, and once bent, don't open them outward. When you've reached the lowest point, return to the starting position. For an easier execution, you can bend your knees and lean.
- Military Plank: Perhaps not everyone is familiar with this exercise... that already sounds challenging from its name! It's an exercise that allows you to work on the entire body because it involves almost all muscles of the body and it is a resistance and concentration exercise. To perform it, start from the push-up position and rest your forearms on the ground, keeping the elbows aligned with the shoulders and the abdomen and glutes engaged. Once in position, you can stay still for about 30 seconds, making sure to always keep the abdomen and glutes contracted and to be as flat as possible, like a plank! The term "plank" means exactly that. If you prefer a more dynamic version, place your hands instead of your elbows and lift yourself up by fully extending your arms, in a push-up position, and return to the starting position.
- Shoulder Press: To perform this exercise, you need two dumbbells or two water bottles. The hands are close to the shoulders, and the palms face forward, in the "Hands up!" position. Now, push the chest slightly forward, keeping the abdomen engaged and the arms at shoulder width. Bring the weights controlled above the head and then lower the arms slowly until you return to the starting position.
Here there are the best exercices to tone and firm up arm and breast skin. And what's better than a well-deserved shower after working out? To keep firming up your skin while showering, try varying water's temperature ranges: switch hot and cold streams onto arms and chest and massage the areas with circular movements. Once you are out of the shower, complete your toning routine with a massage! We suggest you use Sweet Almonds Oil, even better if it's organic. This oil is perfect to make the skin more elastic, as well as to fight stretch marks.
