Fine hair: the thickness of the hair
Besides keratin, our hair is also composed of many other minerals, such as magnesium, copper, silicon and selenium: if these elements are in balance with each other, our hair will be healthy and strong.
Hair thickness, understood as the diameter of the hair shaft, is on average around 0.07 mm, and depends on individual factors such as:
Age: children have thicker hair than adults
The area of the head: the hair at the top and front of the head is thinner than at the nape and temples
Gender: in women, hair is more affected by hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy or menopause, when hair tends to thin
Genetics: Asian populations tend to have thicker hair than Caucasian populations, while in Europe, the hair of the Nordic populations is thinner than that of the Mediterranean populations
Colour: black hair is generally thicker than red hair, while white hair is thicker and grows faster than pigmented hair
The thicker the hair, the stronger it is, because the roots will be deeper, making it better able to stand up to environmental aggressions such as sunlight, cleansing products, dyes, use of hot styling tools and exposure to chlorinated or salt water.
Conversely, fine, thin hair is often more delicate, and requires extra care.
Fine hair: the structure of the hair
Each hair consists of three layers:
the medulla: the central, innermost part
the cortex: the middle part, in which keratin is concentrated
the cuticle: the outermost layer
The thickness of the hair is determined by the central part, i.e. the cortex, where keratin accumulates. In the case of fine or thin hair, the cortex is smaller than normal. As a result, the hair will be less compact and weaker than thick or normal hair, and will also tend to be easily damaged. Fine hair also lacks body and volume, resulting in flat, clinging and less robust hair overall.
What are the causes of fine and thin hair?
Hair thickness, as we have seen, depends on genetic or individual factors, but a lot also depends on how we treat our hair and how we take care of it on a daily basis.
Below is a list of all those external factors that can make hair fine and weak:
Aggressive chemical treatments, such as colouring, perms, bleaching or the use of overly harsh products
Aggressive mechanical treatments, such as the use of hot styling tools (hairdryers, straighteners, irons, etc.)
Stress and anxiety
Atmospheric agents (sun, wind, humidity) and pollutants, which damage the hydro-lipid balance of the skin and ruin the cuticle, making the hair fine and dry
Non-balanced diet
Remedies to take care of fine and thin hair without volume
People with fine hair usually never manage to get the hairstyle they would like: their hair is always flat and lacking in volume and the style does not last long. Here are a few small measures to improve things:
- Choose the right shampoo
- Dry your hair properly. The best method? Bend your head down and dry your hair from the root, which will boost volume!
Try the wavy effect. No more straight hair! Try a wavy hairdo. To avoid using hot tools such as curling irons, we recommend the good, old-fashioned curlers (if you have long hair and want nice, broad waves, the bigger the curlers, the better!). Dry your hair almost completely, place the curlers in and keep them in until completely dry, or you can tie them with a band and keep them like that overnight
- Choose a full cut, no layering of the hair! Opt for even cuts, which give fullness and volume!
- Choose the conditioner carefully. If fine hair is also dry, you’ll need a conditioner to nourish and detangle it: be careful not to choose one that will weigh down your hair. It’s better to opt for light creams with natural active ingredients that regulate the scalp's sebum production, but do not dry out the lengths!
- Opt for a diet rich in iron, copper and zinc (dried fruit, fish, lentils, spinach etc.), which will make your hair stronger and thicker!
- Pamper yourself with an energising scalp massage, to stimulate microcirculation and encourage the natural oxygenation of the bulbs, which will be more nourished, leaving your hair free to shine!
Beauty routine for fine and thin hair
As you may have guessed, choosing a hair care routine with products that do not weigh down your hair is very important in the case of fine hair. Here’s a skin pre-treatment, specific cleansing, hair treatment and styling solution perfect for those who dream of full, supple hair!
Scalp pre-treatment
1) Weekly Treatment: Detox Scrub for the scalp
If our scalp is unhealthy, our hair is unlikely to be shiny and beautiful... that’s why it is very important to take care of our scalp before we take care of our scalp, because shiny hair has its roots in a healthy scalp!
This scrub is perfect for deep cleansing, removing dead cells, reinvigorating the scalp and obtaining shiny hair.
The chicory prebiotic strengthens the natural microbiota of our skin, helping to restore balance and prevent dandruff. The natural extracts of mint and nettle purify and stimulate the skin and follicles, and the aloe gel and witch hazel have a moisturising and soothing action. The hemp oil and argan oil soften and strengthen the hair, while the Vitamin E and natural bisabolol soothe and pamper the scalp.
We recommend using this product once a week if you have an oily scalp, or twice a month if you have a normal or sensitive scalp. Moisten the hair, apply this product to the scalp and massage the scalp with your fingertips, applying extra pressure over the ears, the nape of the neck and the centre parting. Let the microgranules and natural extracts go to work, so they can help remove dead cells, toxins and unpleasant thoughts!
Leave on for a few minutes, rinse and then wash your hair as normal.
2) Weekly Treatment: Pre-Shampoo Treatment with Vegetable Silicone + Amla
Before washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, you can apply this treatment for at least 15 minutes using this dry and silky oil.
Vegetable silicone is an ester of coconut oil that is completely biodegradable and is capable of deeply nourishing the hair without weighing it down.
The Amla extract, an ancient beauty secret of Indian women, has a strengthening effect on the hair due to its content of vitamins, flavonoids, and antioxidants. It helps hair grow healthy and strong and makes it easy to detangle. The presence of Amla in our Pure Hair Actives does not cause darkening of the hair: our Silicone + Amla leaves the hair color completely unchanged.
Specific cleansing

This shampoo is rich in nutrients and functional ingredients such as flax seeds, plant proteins, moringa and sunflower extracts, and is scented with pure sweet orange and geranium essential oils.
It’s the perfect recipe for those with thin and brittle hair, as well as for anyone looking for a gentle shampoo for daily washing that strengthens and protects the hair while leaving a light footprint on our planet.

2) The Solid Alternative: Strengthening Solid Shampoo
This solid shampoo is perfect for fine or dry hair: its strengthening and soothing effect is good for both us and the planet. It hydrates and strengthens the hair thanks to beet amino acids and flax seeds, while chicory prebiotics reinforce the natural scalp microbiota to restore balance and soothe the scalp. It also contains marshmallow, calendula, and witch hazel, which add sweetness to the recipe and provide comfort to the scalp along with shine and luster to the hair!
Choosing a solid shampoo instead of a traditional liquid one allows you to have a small, compact product that is highly concentrated and good for you and the environment! In fact, 50 grams of this shampoo is equivalent to 300 ml of traditional shampoo, making it perfect for traveling in your carry-on luggage! Its packaging is minimal and 100% recyclable (recyclable cardboard and biodegradable film)!

Just apply it to your hair after shampooing once a week in place of your conditioner to envelop your hair in precious natural ingredients, leave it on for 5 minutes, and rinse. You can also use it as a pre-shampoo mask by leaving it on for 30 minutes.
4) The Ultimate Restructuring and Volumizing Treatment: Vegetable Keratin
As we’ve seen, keratin is one of those elements that are naturally present in our hair, but over time its production decreases for various reasons: damage or a decrease in keratin makes hair appear frizzy, weakened, dry, prone to breakage and split ends.
That’s why it’s important to replenish it with specific products that contain it. However, keratin used in traditional cosmetics is often of animal origin: it comes from feathers, manes, hooves, and horns of various animals. But there are plant alternatives!
Our Vegetable Keratin is rich in peptides, oligopeptides, and polypeptides aimed at restructuring and repairing the hair while protecting it from oxidative damage. It contains a large amount of cysteine and sulfur. Its effects are primarily:
- Restructuring: prevents breakage and split ends by restoring the three-dimensional structure of the hair.
- Volumizing: each individual hair increases in thickness and therefore in volume, which is clearly visible under a microscope.
Just spray it onto towel-dried hair before proceeding with drying, and continue the treatment for at least 4 weeks. To learn more about keratin, you can read this article on our blog.

1) Silk Effect with Plant Crystals
A true elixir of beauty to nourish, protect, discipline, and give a silky effect to your hair. We created it by mixing fantastic organic oils of coconut, flaxseed, and hemp with argan oil produced by a women’s cooperative in Morocco, to nourish your locks without weighing them down and making them more radiant than ever.
You can use it after shampooing on damp hair to make it soft and manageable, or on dry strands to set your style, tame frizz, and make your hair shine: it won’t weigh down your hair, making it suitable even for those with fine hair. However, the product should be dosed correctly and can also be used as a heat protector for blow-drying (we recommend avoiding flat irons if you have very fine hair! 😉)
