1.  How BB Cream was born

BB cream was created by a German dermatologist, Christine Schrammek, who had formulated balm creams in the 1960s to reduce the most obvious blemishes, scars and the results of acne. Dr Schrammek's original line was formulated with very simple active ingredients, such as zinc oxide and bisabolol. The basic idea was quite similar to some galenic and dermo-cosmetic formulations popular in Europe, where zinc oxide-based "water pastes" and ointments have always been popular.  But the dulling effect due to the high concentration of zinc oxide triggered the idea of a new use that could partially compensate for the need to conceal scars or acne marks on the face.

BB cream was then revised in the 1980s in North Korea. The problems of Asian skin are substantially different from those of European skin, which until then had influenced the cosmetics market. They differ not only in being oilier and more prone to acne, but also in having a substantially different sebaceous composition. The fatty acids that make up the sebum are more fluid and have a higher concentration of anti-proliferative components. This would lead to a delay in the appearance of wrinkles, but also to a higher incidence of youthful oily skin and acne scarring.

In these countries, more and more coloured creams were developed whose function was, at the end of a beauty treatment (peeling, exfoliating), to cover any traces such as redness or small imperfections but, at the same time, to have the benefits of a soothing and moisturising cream.

2. Is a BB Cream better than a foundation?

Introduced in the West just under ten years ago, BB Cream not only moisturises the skin, but also evens out the complexion, brightens the complexion and reduces imperfections. It also meets the needs of many people who are not in the habit of applying make-up often or simply don't have much time to do so, and decide to simplify their lives by carrying BB Cream in their handbag instead of foundation and moisturiser.

Simplicity and versatility are the real strengths of this product, which can be found in different variants: anti-ageing, with sunscreens, for oily skin and for combination skin. There are also formulas suitable for all skin types. Especially suitable are those based on sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and hyaluronic acid, olive oil and safflower oil.

3. How to choose your BB Cream

Depending on the natural colour of the complexion, different shades can be chosen, such as sand, caramel or beige. The common denominator is a natural matte and even effect.

Remember that a BB Cream is not a foundation, nor does it claim to have the same coverage or end result (but that doesn't mean it does nothing, quite the opposite!). Therefore, whatever shade you choose, there is no risk of streaking or separation between the face and neck. Even if you choose the wrong colour, that's fine: in general, even a darker shade is better suited to the skin it's applied to.

For example, a darker BB Cream applied to fair skin will at best give you a slightly tanned effect, but certainly not an unattractive, unnatural look (which a foundation that is too dark and therefore has the wrong coverage would have).

Does BB Cream also cover blemishes?

In case your skin has very visible imperfections (from pimples to blemishes or dark circles under the eyes), which so far have led you to prefer the use of a foundation, BB Cream should not necessarily be excluded. Certainly, on its own it may not be enough to "save" all make-up, but it can be effectively combined with the use of concealer. For more coverage you can also use the BB Cream in layers: apply it on the skin, let it dry and apply it a second time. The result will be even more beautiful, a more luminous and vital face, a very natural look, with a little extra make-up only in the places where it is really necessary.

Unlike foundations, BB creams do not require precision or laboriousness, the main thing is to even out the product on the face. To get the most out of these products it is best to apply them to clean, dry skin, directly with the fingertips, but also with a small sponge or a small brush, massaging gently, as if it were a classic day cream.

The application is very simple and quick, it is within everyone's reach, you don't need to be an expert make-up artist for an optimal application. At the end of its application, halos and streaks of colour will be barely visible.

6. How to use Like a dream BB Cream in your beauty routine
