Leg capillaries: what they are and what to do to reduce their presence

Our body has approximately two billion capillaries that carry blood, oxygen, and other nutrients. Due to several causes, it may happen that capillaries get more fragile up to the point of breaking, thus becoming visible in certain areas of the legs. There are no remedies that can eliminate them forever, also because they are essential to our body. However, there exist remedies that can reduce the presence of leg capillaries.

Although they do not cause any particularly harmful symptom, broken capillaries often come with tired and heavy legs. Therefore, they may be something to be taken care of. To accept thei presence of broken capillaries is to make the first step to reduce them: being naturally present in our body, there is nothing to be ashamed of if your capillaries tend to break and to be visible. Nevertheless, if you are looking for remedies to reduce their presence, just know that if you follow a balanced lifestyle combined with a correct routine, your legs will experience a renewed sense of lightness!

Here there are the contents of the article:

What are capillaries?

With size ranging from 0.3 to 1.5 millimeters, capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in our body and they are the smallest branches of arteries and veins. We have approximately two billion capillaries that constantly work to carry blood, oxygen, and other nutrients throughout our body, while removing waste substances from our system. Together with arteries and veins, capillars work to make our vascular system and microcirculaiton function.

What is capillary fragility and what causes it?

Due to several causes, it may happen that capillaries get more fragile up to reaching the point of breaking: this might be a sign of a dysfunctional microcirculation. In such cases, broken capillaries become visible as small blueish or reddish branches that appear onto the legs, in particular on the ankles, on the external area of the thighs, or on the internal area of the knees

Capillary fragility is caused by several factors, among which we have:

  • Age: if you are in your 50s, capillaries may get more fragile and consequently more visible if they break;
  • Temporary hormonal alterations such as puberty, pregnancy, or premenstrual phase;
  • Little physical activity: doing physical activity stimulates the microcirculation;
  • Genetics;
  • Lack of vitamin C: absorbing the right amount of vitamin C is essential to guarantee the functioning of blood vessels as well as the antioxydant function;
  • Presence of cellulitis or stretch marks: in such cases, blood struggles to get in-depth in the vessels, so that compensation circles, that is capillaries, are formed.
  • In extreme cases, there may be chronic venous insufficiency.

Anyway, the issue of capillary fragility is mainly caused by reticular veins, which are held responsible for this issue, because they cause hypertension, that is too high a pressure, of the surrounding area where the capillaries arise.

Although they do not come with any particularly harmful symptom, broken leg capillaries are often associated with a sense of heavy and tired legs, precisely because blood struggles to circulate properly.

As to today, there exist many remedies to minimise the presence of broken capillaries while reducing the sense of heavy and tired legs. Let's find them out together!

Remedies to reduce broken capillaries

Thanks to the constant development in science, medicine, and even cosmetology, there are numerous remedies to counteract the appearance of broken capillaries. Among these, we find specific therapies like laser therapy or sclerotherapy, which are effective and ideal if the blemish is particularly widespread, but they can be lengthy, too invasive, or expensive in other cases. Therefore, we can resort to simpler remedies to counteract the appearance of broken capillaries.

First of all, it is essential to have a healthy lifestyle: we have said that doing little physical activity might cause capillary fragility, so doing some helps to stimulate the microcirculation. Walking, even better if you can walk with your legs in the sea in summer, cycling, or swimming are hlelpful to prevent capillaries from breaking. If you do a job that keeps you seated for long periods, try to take short breaks to move your legs and change positions. If your legs feel tired and heavy in the evening, prop them up against the wall or under a cushion to restore circulation and reduce the sensation of heaviness.

Ludwig Feuerbach, a german philospher, once said that "we are what we eat": following a healthy and balanced diet not only helps us to stay fit, but also to counteract capillary fragility and the potential formation of varicose veins. Among the causes of capillary fragility, we have also mentioned the lack of vitamin C: the right amount of vitamin C, which has to be absorbed by eating oranges, lemons, or other citrus fruits, is essential to maintain the correct functioning of blood vessels. Also blueberry and other red fruits, absorbed either trhough diet or cosmetics products, work directly on blood vessels, thus contributing to the maintenance of wall elasticity and protection of capillaries by acting on the connective tissue surrounding the capillaries.

Another thing you can do to counteract the presence of broken capillaries is to alternate hot and cold water while showering: if exposed to hot water, blood vessels enlarge, while if exposed to cold water, they tighten. This simple trick can restore microcirculation.

Among other remedies, you can also try to have a leg massage, since specific leg massages are aimed at stimulating blood circulation. The massage has to be carried out with circular movements, and to boost its effect, you may want to apply apple vinegar or aloe vera and let them act for about 15 minutes.
