Why do we wear makeup? Short story on makeup using a black eye pencil

People have always tried to enhance their look by wearing makeup. Within the history of makeup, there have been fleeting trends that nowadays are out-of-fashion. However, something that hasn not changed overtime is the use of a black eye pencil to enhance the eyes.

6000 years ago, in Ancient Egypt people used natual elements suck as coal, malachite, and iron oxide to create colored pigments for eyes and lips. Black eye pencils were mainly made of coal and it was used by the Ancient Egyptians to define eyeline. It was used both by men and women because eye pencil was believed to protect the eyes from the sun and insects. People coming from upper social classes used to wear more elaborated looks made with more expensive products, but people from middle classes used to wear makeup too.

Both in the Ancient Greece and in the Roman Empire people used to wear makeup. In this case, they used minerals to make the skin look lighter and coal to define the eyeline. Since the Church believed that wearing makeup was a sign of vanity, its use dramatically decreased in the Middle Age. However, it boosted again during the Renaissance. Overtime, the makeup industry has been developping a lot, along with more sophisticated and affordable products. Eventually, during the XIX Century, the black eye pencil became a mainstream product throughout all Europe and America.

And what about the rest of the world? Makeup has always been a significat part of culture and traditions throughout the whole world. From Ancient Persia, to China, and up to Japan with its geishas and their elaborate makeup, or to India where women have always used henna to dye their hands and feet, and kajal, a coal-based substance, to outline their eyes.

Today, wearing makeup is spread all over the world and the makeup industry offers a wide range of products and styles to satisfy the needs of everyone of us. And as to the black eye pencil, it still is a key-element in makeup used to define, outline, and enhance your looks.
